Forcibly, yes, but now that they're nearly upon me I'm looking forward to them. There'll be much travelling around the country tempered, I hope, with much sitting around not doing much. In anticipation I plied some of my wonky handspun.
I had planned to spin some more and settled down to do it a few times, but goshdarnit, my wheel just doesn't want to behave. I've never had such trouble getting the right tension for it to pull on the yarn before and eventually I abandoned it for another day. Now I'm nearly out of days but the 2 balls of unspecified weight or yardage should enough to start the kink neckwarmer pattern.

Ok. Ok. Ok. Some of you may recall that I was somewhat excited to be going to a book signing of one Mr. David Sedaris. That I was knitting him a heart to indulge his macabre tenancies, toing and froing over whether I thought he'd like it or just think I was weird. That I dreamt about the event 3 times in the week preceeding. That I was also panicking that it might all be a bit disappointing. It wasn't. He wasn't. He was an utter charming delight and seemed genuinely touched by my gift. In addition to his inscription, featured previously and included below, he asked for my address and in the weeks that followed sent me a thank you postcard. And now, as discovered by one delightful Miss Tallulah, you may recognize the lady mentioned in this interview in The Improper Bostonion......

Well now. It's been a mighty busy 2 weeks and all I have to show for myself is a couple of inches of sock.

I have been busy with a number of happy things though, which makes it ok. Learning to swim, learning to drive, getting out on bikes, seeing people, having fun. My stuff/junk (the term I use depends on my mood at the time) was delivered the other week, so with ample supplies to hand I hope to get up to non-knitting craft at least once in a while. In particular I intend to do a lot more spinning this year than last year - not least because this is what 3kg of unspun sheeps wool looks like.

Bulky no? In my head I'd like to do a scarf or a shawl of some variety to begin. Perhaps with practice my spinning will become even enough to do a garment proper. First step though - putting the wheel back together.

This weekend I went hunting for some packaging materials for David Sedaris' heart. I wanted simple and ultimately disposable, because the thing could end up in the bin in 5 minutes for all I know. I wouldn't take it personally - I'm sure he gets given a lot of things on tours like these. While the heart is a hella lot more transportable that the taxidermied animals he's been presented with at some shows, it's really just a little trinket and I don't want him to feel burdened with its ownership. It's ok David, when I give it to you, it's yours to do with as you wish - gift it, ditch it, use it to throw at the tv when there's nothing on, whatever.

With this in mind, these are the first socks I've knit with an overall rib effect. It's not really much more complicated that plain, but it's something. I also think the rib all the way down the ankle might help them be less prone to sagging. I'm using aran weight wool from Donegal. I thought given the chunky wool, the rib might not feel so pleasant underfoot so on the the foot portion the ribbing is only on top, with plain stockinette underneath.
Last week I mentioned that I am knitting an anatomical heart for the author David Sedaris. During the week I had a dream I gave it to him and he was actively and openly not impressed by it. In fact, he seemed quite disgusted by the whole idea. When I woke up and was in that brief few moments where your dreams are your reality, I was actually quite upset.

Not naturally superstitious, I am plugging on with the heart regardless.
I'm 'back', as they say. I was away for a while. In England, no less. Very exotic, I assure you. The blog stopped for some reason. Now I'm back, and I suppose it's starting again.

Part of the reason I want to update the blog is to make sure I take pictures of the things I make. Here are some of the things I made or completed while in Ing-Ga-Land. Some of them didn't make it to photo land, or at least not yet. Try to look disappointed.

For sure what I'm most proud of is a quilt for my friends' wedding present. It's hard to be accurate in how long this took me. I started more than a year before the wedding and worked on it off and on for a few hours every once in a while. It's far from perfect - the bias binding around the outside is already coming off in places - but I love it and I think they did do.

So now I'm back in my home country, and I must admit I'm very happy about it. I have decided to revive my blog both for the original reasons I started it (to keep me craftly motivated amidst an ever varying schedule) but also as a means of staying in communiqué with the lovely ladies of the aforementioned Herts Stitch'n'Bitch group. Hanging out with those lovely ladies once a week really made my time in England much more enjoyable and I'll miss them. I have yet to find a knitting group in Dublin which suits my schedule, but in honesty over the last few weeks I've barely had a few hours spare. It's been wonderful being able to spend times with friends and family again but - time must always be made for craft!

At this moment the majority of my craft stuff is in Donegal. I stashed a couple of knitting projects in my hand luggage to keep me ticking over in the meantime. There is a pair of socks knit in one of my favorite yarns - 100% wool from Studio Donegal. I'm working them on some badass carbon fibre knitting needles that I received as a secret santa gift. I'm really taken with them and will be investing in some smaller pairs for socks made out of finer yarn.

On a set of classic wooden double points, I am trying out an anatomical heart pattern I've been meaning to do for the longest time. I want to give one to David Sedaris, my favorite author these days, when I see him at the National Concert Hall next month. It's not a complete fangirl gesture, he's all into grotesque stuff, and anatomical bits and pieces........Ok, it is a complete fangirl gesture, but I'm ok with that.

Long time no speaky. You may recall, before Christmas I was quite busy with some seasonal employment, and what crafting I had time for was for gifts, and to blog would be to spoil the surprise. That's all over now, so I suppose I should get back in business. Naturally I forgot to take pictures of the gifts I made, but here's a few things I've been working on since Christmas.

These were intended as socks, but I didn't cast on enough stitches (I've yet to go to the effort of figuring out gauge or the lie beforehand, I tend to just wing it). I couldn't be bothered to rip back - I was enjoying the knitting rhythm I was in - so I just kept going and made myself some arm-warmers. The white is some homespun featured previously, and the grey is a wool/acrylic blend I originally included to give the socks a bit of extra strength around the heel, as I wasn't sure how the homespun might hold up to such punishment. While these aren't what I originally planned to make, I'm glad it turned out the way it did, as I've been wearing them quite a bit since completion. They're very handy for someone like me who lives in t-shirts and little jumpers.

This patchwork bag was being gifted to someone as a birthday present. I think I must have developed a lot more patience over the last year or so. Not only did I iron, cut, pin, sew, press, re-pin, re-sew etc. etc. this bag is only 2 sittings, but I actually quite enjoyed the process. Normally lots of little finicky tasks annoy me, but as I say, I think I'm accepting that it's a lot more fun to take the time to try and do a job properly.
I'm now well versed in the arts of the small profects - mitts, hats, socks and the like. Time to challenge both my skills and my dedication. I saved up my pennies, sold a few things on eBay, before buying what someone called 'a seizure worth of wool' (as in, like a drug seizure, not you know, that you'd have a fit just looking at it or anything). After coveting it for so long, I've finally cast on the Skully jumper from Stitch'n'Bitch. I went to This Is Knit when I was in Dublin last weekend, as I knew they had the Lamb's Pride Bulky yarn recommended in the pattern. However - crisis! - they did not have enough of any one color for the whole jumper. Luckily, the staff couldn't do enough to help me, and we eventually settled on the relatively inexpensive Freedom Purity yarn as an acceptable substitute. I did a gauge swatch and everything before I cast on - my ways have really changed. I only cast on the front yesterday but I spent a few hours in front of the tv yesterday so I've got a few inches to show for myself.

This jumper has skulls in the sleeves which is not a problem as I can do intarsia now, yay!

And finally, a heart. I must say I'm writing this post with a muster of enthusiasm, which is quite novel. The last few weeks have been quite productive, craft wise. I'll start with the seasonal offering - my Little Red Riding Hood costume. I figured if I found material for the hood cheap enough I could put together the rest of the costume using stuff I already owned, so it has a pleasing balance between creativity and economy. I found a red bed sheet in a charity shop, and used the flounced edge as a detail in the hood. I used this tutorial as a guide for anyone who's interested. The only two specific things that make a Red Riding Hood costume are the hood and the basket (which in the sotry contain wine and fruit, but I opted for a box of Lemsip and a Get Well Soon card). If you look for Red Riding Hood costumes on google all you find are big busted women in low cut tops, which didn't seem overly authentic to me, given that Red Riding Hood was little. Despite the freedom to interpret the costume however I wanted, nothing in my wardrobe seemed suitable, so I used up some fabric from my stash to make a basic black and white lolita style dress, then use some red dye I also had hanging around to give it the appropriate coloring. The idea would be that I'd be able to wear the dress again, rather than having another costume cluttering up my place year round. I used this tutorial for the dress - I've used this pattern several times now and I love it. I didn't put the flounce on the end - I wore a white frilly skirt of mine underneath to add a slight bit of volume.
Stay crafty.Skuldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07203485612514725674noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9039568067993588285.post-20692357329194007022011-10-11T09:10:00.000-07:002011-10-11T09:10:28.398-07:00So, as you may or may not have noticed, I did not post last weekend. This was intentional, as a means of easing us all into a new way of doing things. For the next few months at least, I am going to suspend my normal system of posting every week. There are several reasons for this, the chief one being that my next few planned projects are for people who read this blog. Another reason is that I hope to do a bit of to-ing and fro-ing between my Donegal homeland and other places over the next whileen, which also brings disruption to the post every week ethos. I hope that by just posting when I feel a genuine urge, when I genuinely feel like I have something cool to show, will encourage me to spend a bit more time both on the projects and on the posts themselves. My prose of late has been rather functional, I'll be the first to admit. I'm sure you'll be inconsolable at this news, but don't worry, it will never be too far from another post. Who knows - with the 'pressure' off, they may even become more frequent! And what celebrations we will have then. Ok, for now, tirrah.Skuldhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07203485612514725674noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9039568067993588285.post-22573121877034018442011-10-02T14:31:00.000-07:002011-10-02T14:31:36.228-07:00Winter preparationsThis week saw the beginning of another jigsaw - as I mentioned last week, my sister asked me to complete another 1350 piece monstrosity she needs for an upcoming exhibition. Having already done one, I'm attacking portions of the all-blue sea as early as I can this time. The more pieces you get out of the way, the quicker you progress. Some of these pictures are quite poor quality, being taken on my phone.
It's nearly finished now, but as my sister is under a lot of time pressure I'm going to do another one for her, on a tighter time schedule. Her exhibition is sure to be awesome thanks to my mad jigsaw skillz.
Nary a birthday would pass by without my smuggling something into the party house under tin foil wraps. Like a lot of things, this has fallen by the wayside in recent years, mostly due to time constraints. Well, time is (mostly) all mine now, so I judged it time for a return to my old distraction. I wanted to make something new, and decided on cinnamon buns, because me and my sweet tooth love cinnamon buns on a Sunday morning. I used this recipe, altering it both in the rising time (I made the dough yesterday and let it rise overnight so all I'd have to do today was make the filling and pop them in the oven) and in some ingredients (I left out the pecans, and used demera instead of plain brown sugar) . Unfortunately my oven must be a bit more powerful than some others - the tops (which became the bottoms when the buns were inverted as directed in the recipe) were a little burnt. They still taste pretty good, but next time I will keep a closer eye on them.
I haven't been in months what with being at college all the time, and the last few Saturdays I've either been in Donegal or, erm, hungover. So though I missed today, at least it was to a healthier end. I have high hopes for next week. Anyhoo, I spent the resultant afternoon watching Adventure Time and casting on a new project - some cabled mitts made with delicious yarn I got on my last trip to London. Unfortunately I've since misplaced the label and I can't recall the exact yarn name or blend. What a shame, as it's so soft and luxurious I'd definitely be recommending it. I put a simple cable down the front. Having not worked with cables before, I didn't anticipate how much they would 'pull in' the stitches around them, making the circumference of the glove much smaller than that which I cast on. Thank you all so much!

As I mentioned yonder week, I took advantage of my new found freedom to spend a few days at home in Donegal. Oh, the novelty of being at home for more than 48 hours! As I didn't have any knitting or crochet projects on the go at the time of my departure, I threw some embroidery floss and needles in my bag. My embroidery skills are poor, but nothing improves without practice.
In actual fact I did make one other thing this week, but as it's a gift for someone who may read this blog's imminent birthday, I'll have to keep it secret for now. In the meantime, perhaps I'll mention something else I'm making - though not strictly a craft. My sister is an artist, whose work explores boredom and the acts we carry out as a means of escape. Jigsaws are recurring themes in her work - not just any jigsaws, big ones. She has a project coming up, and I've undertaken to do one of these big jigsaws for her as a means of easing the pressure on her. It's an atlas, so for the most part it should be fine. The sea however, will not be fun, lacking as it is in any distinctive features - this particular atlas has had the lines of latitude and longitude removed. Any tips? Apart from patience and perseverance?

While I could post the document itself, I doubt many would be overly interested in 124 pages about a specific aspect of carbohydrate chemistry. My mind is beginning to reconcile itself with the fact it's over - the hangover I had yesterday certainly helped drive the fact home. When I saw my Masters thesis all bound and professional looking and finished, my mind really was at a loss. What am I going to think about now? it asked me. Over the next few weeks I will attempt to answer this question.

I mentioned I was making an overly large hat last week. Despite ripping back and resizing once or twice, I couldn't get the size exactly the same. I decided to make it a little smaller, as I'm sure it will get stretched out with wear anyway.

I've been sketching a lot of sugar skulls lately - you may remember my skull shrinky necklaces from a few weeks ago. Today while nursing a still somewhat sore head (I haven't drunk that heavily in a while. Correction - I haven't drunk tequila in a while) and watching the cycling, I did a little bit of embroidery on the same theme.

I think we all look forward to me being able to take pictures in natural light. And perhaps spending more time making posts interesting too. As it is, I have a semi-busy first week of freedom, between getting some money sorted and and going to Donegal. Oh yes, I'll be going home during the week until next Monday, so the next post will either be late....or early. I haven't decided yet.

Have an awesome week everyone.

I hope anyway - while there are some improvements I know I could make, at this stage I just want to get the thing out of my sight. Friday is the big day for me. As you can imagine, I'm looking forward to it immensely. I'm taking a few months off, and frugal months they'll be. Among other things - cycling, computers games, reviewing some more chemistry - I'm also hoping to step my crafting up a notch. With so much time on my hands I'll have no excuse for cutting corners and not improving my skills. It will be good for me to learn some patience - though with my chemistry work over the last year I have definately learned the value of taking the time to do something properly the first time. Putting it into practice in my crafting life will be its own reward.

The boyfriend of a good friend of mine had a crocheted hat that he loved. Well, he called it a hat, it was more like a yarn based tureen.

Anyway, it got ripped and I was asked if I could have a go at repairing it. The damage was quite near the center of the hat - in order to repair it I was going to have to rip it nearly all the way back to the beginning anyway. If I did this, I wouldn't be confident if I could accurately recall how huge to make the hat, so instead I've just opted to make another one, using the original as a reference.

As you can see, I still have quite a bit to do, but with the chunky yarn and 6.5mm hook I don't imagine it will take very long. If the shape isn't right I'll have to rip back and do it again, but either way, nothing too labor intensive. Those crafts can wait another week or two.

Among other things, I picked up a sturdy cardboard box, of which they have an ample supply, all sizes, most shapes. Can you guess which shape I went for?
I shan't bore you with details - I'm not travel writer, and my photos are only so so. If you want to read about interesting trips with good photographs and some crafty goodness, I advise you to wander over to my friend Fiona's blog - she's much better at it than I. Suffice to say there were long walks, aquariums, good food and bilingual confusion. I highly recommend San Sebastian as a destination for a couple of days stay, if you like walking and exploring. While we were away the aforementioned Fiona volunteered to feed and water our various creatures. As a gesture of thanks, I made this brooch today, featuring her flutterby favorite and my own brand of wonky mattress stitch. I think there's probably a bit too much distraction from the stitch details, but Fiona, I hope you like it!
Selling clothes and accessories, they provide cheap versions of whatever fashion extravaganzas are sweeping the nations at that moment, as well as basics like underwear, socks, home-wares etc). I rarely pay full price for anything in Penneys though - the beauty of tack is to pay as little as possible for something which someone else paid full price for with no sense of irony. Such as the following earrings - 3 euro full price, or 50 cents on a good day.

I know what some of you may be thinking - as fond as I am of piercing, they're not really mon style. You may recall the purpular yarn I was spinning when I finally 'got' spinning.

Some bits of it were of it were very think, some of it was reaaal thick. I didn't want to add more weight to it, but as it was still a bit overspun in places I wanted to ply it. I decided to use some pink thread from my sewing box. They were quite good, for me, quite thin and mostly balanced. I plied as much as could fit onto my third and final bobbin. I still have some of the unplied singles left, so I think I'm going to spin more onto these , ply those together, then put the 2 skeins together in a dye. I'm thinking I'll dye them either red or a nice deep blue. There's a random 5 rows of garter in the midst of the stockinette - such as will happen when knitting and drinking beers with your sister. What I didn't finish I did during the cycling the week. They're a little bit long along the foot, and for some reason this only got worse after blocking, even though I was really careful not to stretch them. The heel stitches don't really sit under my heel, and as they're pretty narrow I can't even gift them to a long footed man. I'm going to wear them around the house for a little while (they were always meant to be housesocks) and see how I get on. I have so much left from the luxurious skein I probably have enough for another pair anyway. A shorter pair.

Myself and my housemakts are off on holidays tomorrow, huzzah! I'm going home for the weekend, so there'll be no update on Sunday. Now that Jim's scarf is done, I can get back to my second sock, last seen here. I've been doing a few rows here and there over the last few weeks, and just the other night I knit the heel flap. I then started to turn the heel while watching cycling, even though I knew I would mess it up by doing it when not giving t my full attention, and I did. But here's a picture of where I am now anyway - should get loads done this weekend, wee! Excited!
While my photography skills are, well, basically 'point and click', I realize the pictures of late have been a bit dark and blurry. I prefer my little cybershot to my housemate's (ok, let's admit it, he's my boyfriend) fancy camera. I'd probably love his camera if I knew how to use it, but as I say, 'point and click'.
Hurrah for long stages of the Tour de France - I finished Jim's scarf! Ending up at somewhere around 68 inches, I hope he's happy with it. We'll see tomorrow.
I was practicing drawing some to get an idea of what I might do. I've never taken art or anything, as well as this I lack a natural aptitude, so I'm not very good at drawing. Nonetheless, the results were kind of cute, so I turned them into shrinky dinks! These little guys will have jump rings attached - new necklaces, hurrah. I used tippex on the black skull, which cracked during the 'cooking' process. Some of the flakes stuck to the face in the heat.
